Hidden poverty in Beijing

China's urban areas are growing faster than any place in the world, visitors in Beijing often remark on its lack of slums. But Beijing does have slums, I managed to visit these slums and interviewed with the slum dwellers. 

Their stories offer an important perspective about the dark side of urbanization in mainland China. This report got a reporting award in Ming Pao.

The Second History

​"People will naturally fix what they consider ugly." I interviewed with Zhang Dali, the first street artist in China to reveal how photography was used as a tool to manipulate the perceptions of the masses in the particular era in mainland China. Dali investigates a pre-Photoshop era when anonymous retouchers removed extraneous peasants, disgraced officials, and other undesirable details from Mao-centric compositions.

To a further tightening of ideological controls among Chinese news media, the Chinese government started to renews reporters' press cards in 2013. This report interviewed reporters in China to understand this issue and their opinions about political controls in those years. This report got a reporting award in Ming Pao.

Folk Memory Project

In the summer of 2009, Wu Wenguang and his team began a documentary project to record the events that took place between the "3-year famine" from 1959 to 1961. Until now this project has over 100 participants going back to their villages with more than 1,000 interviewees coming from 19 provinces in China.

Feature Story

Zheng Yanliang, 47, a farmer from Baoding city. He was diagnosed with massive arterial thrombosis in both legs. To save medical bills, he cut off his leg using only a metal saw, and a small knife. This series of reports interviewed with him and finally helped him to install prosthesis.
